Day 6 - Clear Lake, IA to Neenah, WI

8:30am
Rise and shine. Time to pack up and move on. We eat a quick breakfast at the hotel, which is right on the lake.

I asked Charlie what he thought of the place...he answered that he didn't think the lake was very clear.

Katie was having fun running out on the doc

Laura and Katie shared a pretty wonderful bonding moment before we took off.

We're on the road at 9:50am. The original plan was to head to Darlington to pick up Laura's mom, but en route, we chatted with her on the phone and modified the plan to meet her at Laura's sister's house in Brooklyn, WI.

Day 6 - mile 2213
11:36am

We make a quick stop in Fredericksberg, IA at Casey's General Store. Elodie grabs a pack of gum, opens it and we unexpectedly have to add it to our purchase. I check our front bumper, we've collected quite the collection of bugs.

Day 6 - mile 2240
12:39pm

The drive has been punctuated by picturesque towns. Dropping down to the Turkey River along US-18, we came across Clermont, IA. It was typical of these little towns.

As we're passing along, Laura makes a remark like, "Isn't this just a cute, old time town." And WHAMO! There it is

The Old Times Inn. So, I guess that just proves it.

Day 6 - mile 2272
1:22pm

After crossing the Mississippi River at Marquette, IA

we stop at Hardee's in Praire Du Chien, WI for lunch. You've got to love Cheddar Bacon Fries. Yum Yum.

Day 6 - mile 2313
3:04pm

Naturally, we have to make at stop in Montfort, WI at Rural Route 1 Popcorn. It's something of a local shrine for Laura. I stayed in the car with Elodie, who, like me, hasn't been tainted with that particular craving.

On the way out of Montfort, we passed a wind farm

Day 6 - mile 2328
3:25pm

At a stop for gas in Dodgeville, Katie and Laura tackle the windshield bugs.

After leaving Dodgewille on WI-191, the kids really enjoyed the "roller coaster" road driving by Laura.

Day 6 - mile 2369
4:42pm

Arrive at Laura's sister Cindy's house in Brooklyn for a quick visit and to pick up Laura's mother, Alice, for the final segment up to Dianne's. While there, Katie's cousin Michelle shows Katie some sparrow eggs she'd found.

We get going again at 5:35pm.

Day 6 - mile 2489
7:40pm

Arrive at Laura's sister Dianne's house in Neenah. We'll be here for a couple days and this marks the end of our outbound leg traveling all together. We covered 353 miles today. In the 5 days of traveling, we averaged 497.8 miles per day. There were some long drives, but looking back on it, there were lots of fun spots. The kids all seemed to enjoy the driving and the time together. It sort of validates why I wanted to take this trip in the first place. Still, the drive did take its toll eventually. During the last few miles, the littliest passenger needed some coaxing to make it.

One final image for the day. Elodie wouldn't settle down unless she went to "sleep" with Grandma.
